Restaurants in Encamp: Quiet Gastronomy in the Valley

Encamp is Andorra's most peaceful and authentic parish. Local cuisine without crowds, lower prices and the Engolasters lake excursion nearby.

Encamp, the quiet parish

Encamp is the third largest parish in Andorra by surface area, yet one of the least affected by shopping tourism. Located in the central valley, about 8 km east of Andorra la Vella along the Gran Valira river, it retains the character of an Alpine village that other parishes have gradually lost to commercial growth. The streets have their own rhythm — locals strolling, children going to school, workers having lunch at their regular bars. This everyday quality translates into honest gastronomy, without tourist gimmicks, at prices noticeably lower than in the capital.

The parish includes several population centres: the vila d'Encamp (the main village), Les Bons, Els Cortals, Vila and the Pas de la Casa area on the French border. Most reference restaurants are concentrated in the centre of the vila. The connection to Grandvalira — the largest ski domain in the Pyrenees — means that the offer expands considerably in winter, especially around the Funicamp telecabin.

Good to know: Encamp is consistently more affordable than Andorra la Vella and Escaldes-Engordany. The midday set menu with starter, main, dessert and drink costs around 12–15€ at most local restaurants, compared to the usual 15–20€ in the capital. A good reason to travel a few kilometres.

Restaurants on Plaça dels Coprínceps

Plaça dels Coprínceps is the urban heart of Encamp. Paved with cobblestones and flanked by Pyrenean architecture, the square hosts some of the village's most popular bars and restaurants. In summer, terraces fill with local families and cyclists arriving on the Gran Valira routes; in winter, with skiers waiting for the Funicamp telecabin or returning from the slopes hungry and in good spirits.

Establishments on the square and its side streets offer reasonable variety: from tapas bars and sandwiches to restaurants with full lunch and dinner menus. The general style is mountain cooking with Catalan influence — trinxat de la Cerdanya, escudella in winter, rabbit with romesco, grilled meats and seasonal salads. Tavlo allows you to check availability and book online at Encamp restaurants that have digital booking enabled.

Tapas bars

Bars around the square maintain the tradition of the midday aperitif — vermouth or beer with patatas bravas, olives, local cheese and bread with tomato. Many also offer half portions and full tapas at very competitive prices.

À la carte restaurants

For more leisurely meals, several restaurants near the square offer full menus. Game cuisine — venison, wild boar, partridge — appears in autumn and early winter at the most traditional establishments. Grilled lamb, bacallà a la llauna and seasonal mushroom dishes are other local staples.

Local and traditional Andorran cuisine

Encamp is one of the best parishes for genuinely Andorran cooking — the kind that mixes Catalan, Aragonese and French influences with Pyrenean produce. Trinxat is the most Andorran dish of all: cabbage and potato cooked, mashed and fried with bacon, sometimes garlic and oil. In Encamp it can be found in its most authentic version — unpretentious, served in an iron pan — at several restaurants in the centre.

Mushrooms deserve special mention. The forests around Encamp — black pine, fir, oak — produce boletus, chanterelles, saffron milk caps and, in good years, Pyrenean black truffles in autumn. Several local restaurants offer seasonal tasting menus centred on mushrooms.

Tip: The excursion to Lake Engolasters (about 6 km from the centre of Encamp on a paved track) combines perfectly with lunch in the village. Head up to the lake in the morning, walk around, and come back for lunch at one of the restaurants on the square. It is one of the best-value outings in Andorra.

Restaurants near Lake Engolasters

Lake Engolasters is one of Andorra's most photographed natural spots. At 1,616 metres altitude, surrounded by black pine forest, with the Romanesque bell tower of Sant Miquel d'Engolasters as a backdrop, it is a popular destination for family excursions, mountain biking and weekend walks. At the lake and along the access road there are several establishments catering to visitors — sandwiches, simple set menus, drinks and ice cream. For more elaborate cuisine, the best option is to combine the lake visit with lunch in the centre of Encamp.

In winter, access to the lake may be cut off by snow. Establishments in that area generally close or reduce their activity, and the offer concentrates in the village. It is worth calling ahead if you plan a visit outside high season (July–September).

Prices and budget

Encamp is, along with La Massana and Ordino, one of the most affordable parishes in Andorra for eating out. Andorra's IGI of 4.5% — compared to 21% VAT in Spain — means that even establishments with a full menu are cheaper than their equivalents in Spanish or French cities.

Type of venueDescriptionAverage price per person
Tapas bar / aperitifsTapas, sandwiches, portions8–14€

The midday set menu is the smartest option in Encamp. For 12–16€ you get a full meal with local produce, generous portions and an authentic atmosphere. Wine — with minimal tax — is especially competitive: a decent bottle rarely exceeds 18–22€ on the menu.

Practical tips

Getting there: Encamp is about 8 km from Andorra la Vella on the CG-2. The drive takes under 10 minutes without traffic. Public bus (L3) connects Andorra la Vella with Encamp every 20–30 minutes during the day. Parking in the village is free and plentiful.

Opening hours: Restaurants follow standard Andorran hours: lunch 13:00–15:30, dinner 20:00–22:30. In low season (May–June and October–November) some restaurants close one or two days a week; it is worth checking ahead.

Reservations: For weekday lunches, booking is rarely necessary. At weekends — especially Saturdays during ski season and Sundays in summer — the most popular restaurants fill up. Tavlo allows online reservations at Encamp establishments that offer this service, with no fees and immediate confirmation.
