Restaurants in Ordino: Andorra's Most Authentic Parish

Ordino is Andorra's quietest and least touristy parish, and that shows in its prices and the authenticity of its gastronomy.

Ordino, the most peaceful parish in Andorra

While Andorra la Vella is the commercial heart of the Principality and Grandvalira its great winter tourism engine, Ordino is something different: the parish that has managed to preserve its soul. Located in the north of the country, this small community of just over five thousand inhabitants combines a well-preserved historic centre, spectacular nature and a pace of life that contrasts sharply with the bustle of the capital.

For travellers looking to eat well without rushing, Ordino offers an honest, territory-rooted gastronomic experience. Restaurants here do not rely on mass ski tourism — Ordino Arcalís is a boutique resort, smaller and more select than Grandvalira — and that shows in the service, the quality of ingredients and prices that tend to be somewhat more reasonable than in the most visited parts of the country.

Good to know: Ordino is the parish with the lowest tourist density in Andorra, and this is reflected directly in prices. A set lunch menu with starter, main and dessert can cost between 12 and 16€ — 2 to 5 euros less than in equivalent venues in Andorra la Vella or Pas de la Casa. A good reason to take the road less travelled.

Restaurants in the historic centre of Ordino

The centre of Ordino is one of the best-preserved historic ensembles in Andorra. The 17th and 18th-century stone houses, arched doorways and the church of Sant Corneli i Sant Cebrià create an atmosphere that invites slow walks and unhurried meals. Most restaurants in the historic centre are clustered within a very short radius, making it easy to compare menus and find a table.

Long-established local restaurants

Ordino has several long-running restaurants that have been the meeting point for local families, weekend hikers and repeat visitors for decades. These venues typically offer traditional Andorran and Catalan menus — carn d'olla, fricandó, grilled rabbit — alongside a weekday set lunch that represents the best value for money in the area.

The square and terraces

In the warm months — May to October — the terraces on the main square and adjacent streets become the most pleasant place to eat in Ordino. The atmosphere is calm, the shade of the trees tempers the midday heat, and the mountain views make any meal more enjoyable.

Mountain cuisine and bordas

The bordas are the gastronomic symbol of authentic Andorra. Originally built as mountain barns and stables, these stone and timber buildings have been converted into restaurants serving local, character-driven cuisine. Around Ordino there are several bordas worth the detour, especially in autumn when game and wild mushrooms take centre stage on the menu.

What to eat in a borda

The typical borda menu revolves around a handful of essential dishes. Escudella — a hearty broth with pasta, chickpeas and a meat patty — is the classic winter starter. Trinxat with cured bacon, duck confit with cabbage, river trout with almonds and grilled lamb chops are the most common main courses. Home-made desserts — crema catalana, chocolate mousse, mel i mató — round off the meal with the simplicity that defines this cuisine.

In autumn, bordas in the Ordino valley incorporate seasonal wild mushrooms — rovellons, trompetes de la mort, ceps — into omelettes, garnishes and main dishes. The hunting season adds wild boar, venison and partridge to a menu that is particularly interesting at this time of year.

Tip: If you want to combine a visit to Ordino's historic centre with lunch at a borda, the ideal plan is to spend the morning in the village and book a table for lunch at a valley borda. Bordas fill up at weekends, especially in autumn and ski season. Book at least a day in advance.

Restaurants near Ordino Arcalís

Ordino Arcalís is the northernmost ski resort in Andorra and, for many snow enthusiasts, the most authentic. Without Grandvalira's crowds or the service saturation of larger resorts, Arcalís maintains a boutique character. The same philosophy extends to its food offering: restaurants in the Arcalís area are few but carefully chosen.

Between Ordino and Arcalís, the small settlements of La Cortinada and El Serrat have some of the most recommended restaurants in the entire parish. La Cortinada, with its Romanesque church of Sant Martí, has bordas and restaurants open year-round. El Serrat, at the northern end of the valley, offers a more limited but very authentic selection.

Prices and budget in Ordino

Ordino is, along with Canillo, the most affordable parish in Andorra for dining out. Lower tourist pressure compared to Andorra la Vella or the ski resorts translates into more contained prices and better value for money at most establishments.
