Why shop in Andorra?
Andorra is a rational shopper's paradise. As a small sovereign state outside the European Union, it does not apply European VAT (21% in Spain, 20% in France) but instead the IGI (Impost General Indirecte), which ranges from 0% to 4.5% depending on the product. The result is a price difference that, for certain products, can exceed 30%.
This is not a market for imitations or goods of dubious origin: the same brands, the same models, exactly the same product you would find in Madrid, Barcelona or Toulouse, but at a noticeably lower price. Luxury brands, perfumeries and electronics stores have known this for decades and have been operating in Andorra precisely for that reason.
The real price difference: A 100 ml bottle of perfume that costs 120 euros in Spain is around 85–95 euros in Andorra. A bottle of 18-year-old whisky that retails at 75 euros in Spain can be found here for 48–55 euros. Electronics can mean savings of 10–20% compared to Spanish online prices.
What to buy (and what is not worth it)
Perfumes and cosmetics
This is the category with the greatest price difference and where savings are most visible. The main brands — Chanel, Dior, Hermès, Lancôme, Estée Lauder — are present in the large perfumeries of Andorra la Vella (Julià, Aligué, Viladomat). Prices are significantly lower than in Spanish department stores and equal to or lower than airport duty-free shops, with the advantage of a much wider selection.
Alcohol and tobacco
Perhaps the most spectacular saving. Tobacco in Andorra can cost between 40% and 60% less than in Spain. Alcohol — wines, whiskies, cognacs, gins — between 25% and 40% less. Be aware of the customs declaration limits before loading up your car boot.
Electronics and photography
Cameras, lenses, computers, tablets and branded accessories have competitive prices in Andorra, although the difference is smaller than for perfumes or alcohol. The main advantage lies in the breadth of the catalogue: in Andorra you will find models that are sometimes unavailable in Spanish stores.
Clothing and fashion
The price difference in fashion is smaller and more variable. Mid-to-high-range brands (Mango, Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein) have prices similar to those of Spanish outlets. Luxury brands are still cheaper than in Spanish boutiques, but the difference is not as striking as in perfumery.
What is not really worth it
Everyday food and supermarket products have prices similar to Spanish ones, except for alcohol and tobacco. Jewellery requires careful price comparison before buying. Low-cost tech items do not always justify the journey.
Shopping areas in Andorra
Andorra la Vella: the commercial heart
The capital concentrates the majority of shopping options. Carrer Major and Avinguda Meritxell are the two main shopping arteries, with perfumeries, fashion boutiques, electronics stores, jewellers and shopping centres in a very pleasant pedestrian area. The large perfumeries (Julià, Aligué, Viladomat) have several branches in this zone.
Escaldes-Engordany
Almost adjoining Andorra la Vella, Escaldes has a similar offer with some additional exclusive stores. Punt de Trobada is a small shopping centre with a good selection of sports and outdoor brands.
Pas de la Casa
This border village with France has a commercial offer very much aimed at skiers: snow sports shops, technical mountain clothing and, of course, perfumeries and liquor stores. It is the usual entry point for those coming from Toulouse or the cities of southern France.
| Category | Estimated saving vs. Spain | Where to buy |
|---|---|---|
| Tobacco | 40–60% | Tobacconists / supermarkets |
| Alcohol (spirits) | 25–40% | Liquor stores, supermarkets |
| Luxury perfumes | 20–35% | Julià, Aligué, Viladomat |
| Electronics | 10–20% | Media Markt, specialist stores |
| Luxury clothing | 10–20% | Boutiques on Av. Meritxell |
Customs limits and declaration
When leaving Andorra and entering Spain (or France), there are customs checks. The duty-free import limits for travellers arriving from Andorra are:
Alcohol: 1 litre of spirits above 22°, or 2 litres below 22°, plus 4 litres of still wine and 16 litres of beer. Tobacco: 200 cigarettes, or 100 cigarillos, or 50 cigars, or 250 g of rolling tobacco. Perfumes: 50 g of perfume + 250 ml of eau de cologne. Other goods: 900 euros per adult.
Warning: These limits are strict and the Spanish customs post in Andorra has been modernised with vehicle scanners. It is not worth taking the risk: if you buy more than allowed, declare it and pay the corresponding duties. The fine for concealment is far more expensive.
Practical tips
Compare prices before you leave. Note down the exact price of the product you want to buy in Spain. Not everything is cheaper in Andorra, and comparing in-store takes time.
Fridays and Saturdays are the busiest days in perfumeries and liquor stores. If you can go on a weekday, the experience is much more relaxed.
Card payments are universal. Andorra uses the euro and its payment infrastructure is modern. You do not need to carry cash to shop.
