Andorra is a destination perfectly sized for a weekend break. Small in area but rich in what it has to offer, it can be explored in depth in two and a half days. This itinerary is designed to make the most of Saturday and Sunday, arriving on Friday afternoon and heading home after lunch on Sunday. A summer variant is included at the end of the guide.
Friday: arrival and first night
Evening. If you are travelling from Barcelona, you will reach Andorra la Vella in 2h30–3h. Coming from Madrid by car, the journey takes 6–7h, so it is worth setting off before midday. The best plan for Friday is to check into your hotel, take a stroll along Avinguda Meritxell to get your bearings, and have dinner at a relaxed pace.
Friday night is not the time to chase down the best traditional borda: the top restaurants fill up quickly and it is worth having booked ahead. A good alternative for the Friday dinner is one of the well-executed international restaurants in the centre of Andorra la Vella — Japanese, Italian or a French bistro. The city has enough choice to make the first night enjoyable without complicated logistics.
Book your hotel before you leave. On Fridays during high season — especially in winter — quality hotels fill up fast. Do not arrive in Andorra without a confirmed reservation.
Saturday morning: skiing or nature
In winter: skiing at Grandvalira. Saturday is the main day. If you have come during the snow season, the morning belongs to the mountain. Buy your ski pass online the day before to avoid queues at the ticket office. Park in Encamp and take the free gondola up to the base of the resort — far better than trying to find parking in Soldeu on a busy Saturday. The El Tarter and Grau Roig sector is less crowded than Soldeu–Pas de la Casa. The best hours are between 9:00 and 13:00.
Outside ski season: hiking or nature. If you are visiting Andorra in summer or spring, Saturday morning is ideal for a mountain trail. The Estanys de Tristaina route (Ordino) is perfect for a Saturday: set off early to beat the midday heat, it offers spectacular scenery, and the moderate difficulty level leaves plenty of energy for the afternoon.
Saturday afternoon: spa and shopping
13:30 — Lunch. After skiing or the morning hike, time for lunch. If you are still in the Grandvalira area, eating at one of the mountain restaurants in the resort is convenient and prices are reasonable. If you are already back in the capital, look for a restaurant serving Andorran cuisine: trinxat or escudella are the ideal lunch after a morning on the snow.
15:30 — Shopping along Carrer Major. With your energy restored, Carrer Major and Avinguda Meritxell are lively on Saturday afternoons. If you have specific items in mind — perfume, electronics, spirits — this is the moment. Bring a note of reference prices from back home to compare in store.
17:30 — Caldea or Inúu. By 17:30, after hours of skiing and shopping, your body will welcome warm water. Walk-in access to the Caldea Lagoon is possible on some days, but for Inúu it is advisable to book several days in advance. A two- or three-hour session at the thermal spa complex is the best way to round off an afternoon in Andorra.
Saturday evening: dinner at a borda
Saturday night is the highlight dinner of the trip. Book 3–4 days in advance at one of the Principality's historic bordas. La Borda Pairal 1630 in Andorra la Vella and La Borda de l'Avi in Escaldes are two of the absolute benchmarks: an authentic atmosphere, top-quality produce and mountain cuisine prepared with care.
Arrive on time for your reservation (bordas keep to the clock) and ask the waiter for advice: the season determines which dishes are at their best. In autumn, ceps mushrooms and civet de jabalí. In winter, trinxat and escudella. In spring, peas and Pyrenean asparagus. Order a bottle of wine from the list: the VAT-free prices mean that even a Rioja Gran Reserva is within easy reach.
Expect to spend between 45 and 65 euros per person including wine. Not cheap, but not expensive either for the quality and experience on offer.
Sunday: a relaxed morning and heading home
9:00 — Leisurely breakfast. Sunday morning is unhurried. Have a relaxed breakfast at the hotel or at one of the cafés in the centre of Andorra la Vella. Croissants and Andorran ensaimadas make a fine start to the day.
10:00 — Market or a walk. If it is Sunday and there is a market in Andorra la Vella, a wander among the stalls is a pleasure. When there is no market, a walk through the quieter streets of the old centre — the Barri Antic with the Casa de la Vall and the church of Sant Esteve — offers the historical perspective that the earlier days may not have left time for.
12:00 — Last-minute shopping. Shops are open on Sundays in Andorra, unlike many Spanish cities. If there was anything left on your list from Saturday, Sunday morning is the time. Supermarkets and perfumeries are open as normal.
14:00 — Lunch and departure. A light lunch before hitting the road. If you are leaving via the Spanish border, bear in mind that Sunday afternoon queues can build up. Setting off before 16:00 or after 20:00 is most advisable.
Summer variant: a weekend in summer
In summer the schedule is different but equally rewarding. Friday: arrive and have a good dinner. Saturday morning: the Estanys de Tristaina route or the Vall del Madriu, depending on fitness and available time. Saturday afternoon: shopping and Caldea. Saturday evening: dinner at a borda. Sunday: Naturlandia or a more relaxed plan in the centre before heading home.
In July and August, afternoons are warm on the valley floor (25–28°C) but cool as soon as you gain altitude. It is the season for terraces, ice cream and early-morning excursions. Andorra in summer draws fewer tourists than in winter, and both restaurants and natural spaces can be enjoyed in greater peace.
